You may have said this at some point as a comforting cliche. Perhaps it has brought you comfort in a difficult time. The phrase is not found in the Bible and is problematic on several levels. God does not dispense calamity to test us; rather, God is present, ready, and waiting to intercede on our behalf in various ways.
